Name: The Disciple || Leola Davis
Canon: Homestuck
Age: 28
Preincarnation Appearance: Here!
Any differences: She's a dark skinned African American with long braids and hazel eyes. So, no grey skin, no yellow/green eyes and no big yellow horns.
Preincarnated History:
The life of the Disciple could be said to start long before she was born, in a different universe in fact. On the world 'Beforus', there were twelve trolls who lived in a world of comparable safety to our own, but with a built in caste by blood color. The Disciple was called Meulin Leijon in that lifetime and she played a game that caused the end of their universe. Their universe, referred to as the Alpha Universe, was 'scratched' and reborn as a new universe, the Beta Universe. As with all the other trolls of the Alpha Universe, she was reborn there.
The Disciple was born as Paasht Madlen on the harsh world of Alternia with a representative symbol that is closest to the Leo Zodiac symbol. She was an oliveblood, around the middle of a spectrum of blood colors that ranged from the impossibly low rust red to the impossibly high and impossibly rare tyrian purple. Her life as a troll in the middle was certainly more comfortable than lowerbloods. While her early life isn't illuminated on in the series itself, she must have lost her lusus, the guardian creature who shares her bloodcolor, before meeting with a peaceful, yet rebellious troll who went by Signless. She followed him after hearing his words of peace and equality for all trolls and wrote down all his words. During their travels, she became known as his Disciple, or the Disciple.
Near the end of their journeys and rebellion, their group had settled into four; The Disciple, The Signless, The Dolorosa, and the Psiionic. Unfortunately, the violent nature of the world caught up to them and Signless was executed. The Dolorosa was enslaved and eventually murdered and the Psiionic was turned into a glorified power source for a ship. The Disciple herself was spared thanks to a troll having pity on her and she lived the rest of her days as an exiled hermit. Though it is thanks to her living that anyone knew of the Signless' words and teachings.
Also worth mentioning is the existence of her descendant, a troll who shared the same symbol and blood color as herself, named Nepeta Leijon. She lived many many sweeps after the Disciple
While this much we can infer from the little mentioned in canon, not much else is known. The Disciple is only mentioned in the context of the Signless.
Reincarnated History: Leola was born as the second of three children to a single mother in a huge sprawling family on the less well off side of Locke City. So it's more accurate to say that while her mother never married the fathers of her children, there were more than enough relatives to help raise the three children. It did mean that they were more on the poor side. Leola was constantly surrounded by her siblings and cousins and became one of a crowd more often than not. It was then that she learned to be loud, to ask for what she wanted and needed. Being generous--but not too generous, that's what she learned from her family in the end.
As a child, she knew she wanted to get out of the cramped apartment buildings she lived in, though the thought of being rich and famous was just an idle daydream. Even with all the optimism she could muster, she just didn't have the talents everyone else did. Drawing and writing were what she was best at and they were hardly going to do more than get her artwork posted in the hallways at school. A visit by an alumni at her middle school was what finally inspired her. The woman had become a professor at the local University--an English professor. She was smart and funny--she was brilliant. She taught with all the passion she had and Leola thought maybe she could do that too.
Yet it was a hard path. The public school she went to meant that she was once again, just one of a sea of faces. This time, she couldn't ask for what she really needed, more attention, more one on one time, so she simply studied in every spare moment. Reading was all she seemed to do: on the bus to school, on the way home, at night with a lamp under the cover while her sister slept above her. Though it got her plenty of teasing for caring too much about her grades, she tried her very best right up to the last day of high school. She was proud the day she came home to find out that that hard work had paid off with an acceptance and scholarship to the University.
Still, her work was far from over. After snagging a part time job on campus, she still had mountains of work to do. Yet, it was fun in its own way. There was something peaceful, almost zen-like, about sitting in a classroom and listening to the professors speak. Lectures became her favorite classes throughout college, easily surpassing even the more hands on things. She briefly dated a boy, then a girl, not caring what the others thought of her. Her own acceptance of her sexuality as 'whatever' was easy--though she wouldn't be telling her mother about that girl. It simply didn't occur to her to discriminate, though how she had gotten to that point before realizing that, she didn't know. She made a few friends in school that lasted beyond the dormitory, but most left the city after a few months. Drifting apart was sad, but Leola had never been troubled by the small goodbyes. It was always a promise to see them soon.
It wasn't until her placement at a school on the other side of the city that she finally seemed to settle into a proper social group. A few close friends, a few acquaintances at work, and five classes of eager young minds--or not so eager as the case may be. Frustrated by the lack of interest, she ranted and raved at her colleagues before finally accepting she couldn't always make them see things the same way. It's always a matter of explaining and showing, and letting them decide for themselves how much they wanted to care about their grades. Still, she'll never quite understand how they don't find To Kill A Mockingbird amazingly fascinating.
She'd been at the school for four years when she experienced her first Echo. Three years has passed since then.
First Echo:
When Leola was selected to go to a seminar on better teaching, she jumped at the chance. It was almost a vacation but really the best part was hearing the lectures, of course. Her favorite one of all was the man who let everyone in, even when the seats filled, and he spoke about higher wages and more teachers for the classroom. He spoke of teaching children kindness and empathy even when tests were paramount in their field. Just standing at the back of a room, hearing a man speak passionately about his cause; it made her heart soared. It reminded her of something, something very precious.
But she never found out what. It just stayed with her as a nagging memory again and again. When she returned to her hotel room to unpack, she found a book with a green leo symbol stashed in her bag. She made a cursory effort to find the owner but when none appeared, it became her journal. It's almost always on her person.
Preincarnation Personality:
Disciple is Nepeta Leijon's Ancestor and as such is similar to her in many ways. She is loyal to a fault, lively and happy, and is a competent huntress. Unlike her descendant, she refuses to use violence against her fellow trolls. It's noteworthy that even though the e%cutioner killed the Signless and the Disciple is griefstricken, she does not attempt to hurt him or attack her. Her love for the Signless and her utter grief at his death do not overshadow the teachings he instilled in her and she refuses to attack.
She is also a 'do-over', so to speak, of the dancestor (descendant-ancestor) Meulin Leijon. Meulin lived in the Alpha Universe, a very different enviroment than either Paasht or Nepeta. It was more calm, yet also defined by castes and the hemospectrum. Meulin was very easily excited, eager to make friends, and devoted to her cause, though in that case, it was Kurloz and his religion. It's easy to say that this devotion might stay throughout all her lifetimes in different forms.
Before the death of Signless, The Disciple was a bright and lively individual, a trait she shares with both Meulin and Nepeta. She was unafraid of what lay ahead as she traveled. Her favorite activity was always reaching the next hill or the next town. Nepeta and her are both great lovers of adventure, and to Disciple, every day was a new adventure and it was all the better for having her lover and friends at her side. Meulin was quick to forgive and not let the past bring her down, even after own lover rendered her deaf and the Disciple is just as unlikely to hold a grudge or let the run ins with highbloods ruin her optimism. Her ability to look on the bright side and take a lighter tone was invaluable in a group of somewhat serious individuals. In fact it could be, on occasion, somewhat grating because she insisted on taking the 'look on the bright side' thing a bit too far. Which is to say, Disciple, much like Meulin, almost entirely lacked the ability to read the atmosphere. She says the wrong thing at the wrong time quite often and is quick to assume just as her other self failed to see the tensions and problems within her own group of trolls.
She enjoyed writing almost obsessively, taking it upon herself to write down all of his sermons and often carried around her book of his teachings. She recorded nearly everything in fact, from the towns they visited to conversations their group had. Meulin was extremely talkative but unlike her, the Disciple has become equally able to be a great listener. It is a learned trait, born from needing to know new information and skills on her own. Catch her interest and she will sit there listening to you go on and on. She was very adept at making fires, skinning and preparing animals, and finding new plants for them to eat, all skills we see Nepeta learned from her own lusus. She loves to be useful, going out of her way to figure out tiny ways she can help her friends or random trolls.
Meulin and Nepeta are both avid shippers and lovers of well, love, in it's many troll forms. The Disciple is no different, having a fascination with the complex ways relationships form. She has a shipping wall of sorts --kept in a portable book for travel-- just like Nepeta, and the same tendency to meddle in her friends love lives that Meulin tends towards. It's more of an annoyance on the road, considering her meddling inclinations tend to be within their group and there are only so many combinations she can have with four people.
While Meulin was a mediocre fighter at best and tended towards non confrontation, the Disciple grew up on a world that necessitated that she learn the skills to defend herself and be more proactive about confrontation. Before becoming his Disciple, she got into a few fights but the need has lessened since becoming a follower of Signless with his dreams of peace and equality. A trait all three Leos share is certainly their defensiveness of their friends, though they all are fairly candid about their friends bad points. Nepeta admits to Equius that he's disgusting and Meulin definitely admits that Kurloz comes off strange, but they won't hear a true bad word about them. Threaten or insult someone she cares about and the Disciple is quick to defend them. This is one of the few times she allows herself to be violent or annoyed.
After his death, she became a muted version of herself. A a bit of a loner then, her love of being around people and talking to new faces lessened. It wouldn't be a stretch to say she had become somewhat depressed and obsessed. Since all she had left of the Signless are the leggings she took and the words she remembers, she was focused on writing them down.
As both Meulin and Nepeta use catpuns, Disciple does as well (even if they don't always translate well into spoken speech). She's more sheepish about it than those two, as an adult, seeing it as a thing only children really do. Still, they pop up when she's excited, angry or upset as a hold over from her childhood and at times a tribute to her feline lusus. There are other quirks she shares with the other Leos such as her love of 33 but they are more when she is writing to herself. Her voice is a little more high pitched when upset or excited.
Any differences:
The Disciple was an avid hunteress but Leola never has need of that, living in the suburbs and city. So it's easy to say she never learned any of those skills nor the casual attitude about killing animals. She'd be hard pressed to kill a rat outside a mousetrap now.
She is also a little more selfish. The Disciple was eager to please and generous after hearing the words of Signless, but Leola learned as a child that if she didn't insist on something or get something for herself, she would be ignored or walked all over. She is kind, of course, but she knows that what she has is due only to her own hard work.
And while the Disciple was devoted to Signless and Meulin was devoted to Kurloz, Leola is still searching for the thing she wants to devote her life to. It makes her feel aimless at times, like her life isn't fufilling without something to devote herself to. Even teaching is just a thing she likes doing, not something she feels she was meant to do.
Abilities: The Disciple was a skilled huntress, using long retractable claws attached to her gloves that resemble Nepeta's gloves in form and function. This would include tracking, killing, gutting and skinning beasts. She's stronger than a normal human, since I've headcanoned that she can take down quite large beasts.
She could also see in the dark, due to the fact that trolls as a species are nocturnal.

Alright guys if I need an alibi, I'm counting on you. My favorite parent is here for a teacher conference and it can only mean one thing. Her son actually made her sign that failing project.
Did you know that I should change grades for their child simply because they are failing? No effort required! I really try to make things equal! I offered five way to do the project. I'm sure if they just had tried.
Kids. Put effort into your work and you'll be rewarded. I promise!
And would any of the adults like to meet somewhere for drinks? I have absolutely nothing to grade this weekend and a need for something strong in a fancy glass.
Any Questions? None that I can think of!
